Concrete retaining wall holding back a sloped yard

A retaining wall holds back soil so you can create flat, usable ground on a sloped lot. It can stop erosion, keep a hillside from creeping onto a driveway, frame a patio, or turn a steep backyard into level terraces. We build poured concrete retaining walls for properties in Brighton, Fenton, Hartland and South Lyon, especially the rolling and lakeside lots common in this part of Michigan.

Poured concrete walls are strong, compact and can be finished smooth or with a texture to suit the landscape.

Why Drainage Matters Behind Every Wall

The biggest enemy of a retaining wall is water trapped behind it. The clay soils found across Livingston County drain slowly, and when that saturated soil freezes it expands and pushes against the wall. Over time, that pressure can tilt or crack a wall that was not built with drainage in mind. Road salt and freeze-thaw cycles also wear on exposed faces. We plan footings, reinforcement, drainage stone and weep openings so water has somewhere to go.

Drainage is the single biggest factor in whether a retaining wall stands for decades or starts to lean. Water trapped behind a wall adds enormous pressure, and in winter that wet soil can freeze and push even harder. That is why we plan for drainage gravel, drain pipe where it is needed, and weep openings so water has a way out. Lake lots and hillside yards around Brighton often have springs or heavy runoff, and we account for that during the estimate rather than after the wall is built. For taller walls, we will also let you know if local rules call for engineering or a permit before work begins, so there are no surprises later.

Our Process, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Site evaluation

We look at slope, soil, water flow and what the wall needs to hold back.

  2. 2

    Excavation and footing

We dig to solid ground and pour a footing to carry the wall.

  3. 3

    Forms and reinforcement

Wall forms and steel reinforcement are set to the planned height and layout.

  4. 4

    Pour the wall

Concrete is placed and consolidated to avoid voids.

  5. 5

    Drainage and backfill

Drain stone and piping go in behind the wall before it is backfilled and graded.

Options Available

  • Smooth poured walls

    A clean, modern face.

  • Textured or form-liner finishes

    Patterns that add visual interest.

  • Seat walls

Low walls around a patio or fire pit that double as seating.

  • Terraced walls

Several shorter walls stepping up a hillside.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do retaining walls need a permit?

It depends on height and your township or city. We will discuss this during the estimate so you know what to check before work starts.

Why is my old wall leaning?

Most often, water pressure behind the wall or an inadequate footing. We can look at it and tell you whether repair or replacement makes sense.

Who builds your walls?

Our family-owned crew does the work. We are licensed and insured, with over 10 years in the concrete trade.
