Poured concrete front steps and porch

Front steps and porches get used every single day, and they are one of the first things visitors notice. Crumbling edges, loose railings and steps that have pulled away from the house are not just ugly; they are a safety concern. We build new poured concrete steps, stoops and porch slabs and replace failing ones for homes in Brighton, Howell, Pinckney and South Lyon.

Jobs include front entry steps, side and back door stoops, garage entry steps, and larger porch slabs with steps leading down to a walkway.

Why Steps Fail in Michigan and How We Build Them

Steps have a lot of exposed edges and corners, which makes them especially vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage and the rock salt people spread on them all winter. Salt-driven scaling often shows up first on treads and nosings. Steps that sit on loose fill or poorly compacted clay tend to settle and tip away from the house. We start with proper support, use a mix meant for exterior exposure, and form consistent rise and run so the steps are comfortable and safe to use.

Steps take more abuse than almost any other concrete around the house. They collect snow, get shoveled with metal blades, and are often treated with salt to keep them safe, all of which wears down the surface over time. Because they sit right against the home, they can also settle if the soil underneath was not compacted well when the house was built. When we replace steps, we pay close attention to the base, the connection to the house, and a consistent rise for each step, so they feel natural and safe to use in any season. We can also work around existing railings or plan for new ones, and leave a surface texture that gives good footing.

Our Process, Step by Step

  1. 1

    Measure and plan

We measure door height, landing size and walkway connections to set comfortable step heights.

  2. 2

    Demolition

Old steps or stoops are broken up and removed.

  3. 3

    Base and support

We prepare compacted support or footings as the design requires.

  4. 4

    Forming

Forms are built for each riser and tread, with reinforcement placed inside.

  5. 5

    Pour and finish

Concrete is placed and finished with a textured surface for grip, then forms are stripped.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair my steps instead of replacing them?

Minor surface issues can sometimes be patched, but steps that have settled or crumbled usually need replacement. We will give you an honest opinion.

What should I use for ice instead of rock salt?

Sand for traction is gentlest on concrete. If you use a de-icer, ask us which types are less harsh, and avoid using it on concrete less than a year old.

Who does the work?

We are a family-owned, licensed and insured contractor with over 10 years of experience.
