Exposed aggregate is concrete with the top layer of cement paste removed so the natural stone inside shows through. The result is a pebbled, textured surface with a lot more character than plain gray concrete. It works well on driveways, front walks, porches and pool decks. We install exposed aggregate for homeowners in Brighton, Ann Arbor, Milford and Pinckney.
Because the texture comes from real stone rather than a coating, the look is part of the slab itself and blends nicely with brick, stone and landscaped yards.
A Good Fit for Michigan Conditions
The rough, stony surface gives extra traction on wet and icy mornings, which matters in a place where sleet and freezing rain are common. Like any exterior concrete, it still has to survive freeze-thaw cycles, road salt and shifting clay soils, so the work underneath is just as important as the finish on top. We prepare a solid base, use a mix suited to outdoor winter exposure, and recommend sealing to help protect the surface from salt and staining.
Exposed aggregate also handles winter better than many people expect. The textured surface gives tires and boots more grip on wet or icy days, and because the look comes from the stone itself rather than a coating, there is no surface color to wear away. Like any exterior concrete in Michigan, it benefits from a good sealer, which helps keep water and salt out and keeps the stones looking rich. We will explain how often to reseal and what products to avoid. Because the stone choice drives the final look, we are happy to talk through the options before you commit, so the color and texture fit your house and the rest of your landscaping.
Our Process, Step by Step
- 1
Choose the look
We talk about stone color and size and where the finish will go.
- 2
Site prep
Excavation, compacted base and forms, just like a standard slab.
- 3
Pour and finish
Concrete is placed and leveled, then the surface is treated so the top paste can be removed at the right time.
- 4
Expose the stone
At the right stage of setting, we wash and brush the surface to reveal the aggregate evenly.
- 5
Joints and sealing
Control joints are cut and, once cured, a sealer can be applied.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is exposed aggregate harder to keep clean?
The texture can hold more dirt than smooth concrete, but a hose or pressure washer and periodic sealing keep it looking good.
Can you match existing exposed aggregate?
We can get close, but stone and cement vary between batches, so an exact match is not guaranteed.
Who installs it?
Our own family-owned crew, licensed and insured, with over 10 years of concrete experience.
